Who is Southampton?
Hamble to Weston
Southampton Water is the gateway to Southampton docks, Southampton port being the U.K.'s second largest. The area has been occupied since the stone age, and the Romans established a port here nearly a thousand years ago, its importance as a mediaeval port was immense, wool was exported from here and silk and other luxury goods were imported. It had military significance and strategic importance. In this series I will look at the area with a view to tracing the diversity of the city from its history to the present day. In this first expoloration we walked from Hamble Le Rice to Itchen.
